Outside. Every day.
Birdwatching on Folly Island near Charleston, South Carolina. 2020. OGDEN-MUSE
The glacier-clad North Cascades, humming with snowmelt. The Upper Mississippi backwaters, bird-stuffed and lily-covered. Zion’s cliffs and canyons, New York’s skyscrapers, the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River, one of the most beautiful valleys on Earth. I’ve gotten around because I love to go, if only for a walk in the neighborhood.
Exploring wildlands and cityscapes throughout the United States, I’ve been an environmental educator, naturalist, and park ranger for more than 20 years. With master’s degrees in science and creative writing, the latter from Ashland University’s MFA program, I grew up amid the small towns and cornfields of central Indiana, in the Buck Creek watershed east of Indianapolis. Today, Charleston, South Carolina, is my home, from tidal salt marshes to centuries-old cobblestone streets. Along with writing essays, I interpret slavery, racism, and freedom at McLeod Plantation Historic Site. Join me for a tour.
My first book, Dear Park Ranger, is nearly complete. Enjoy a brief sample recently published in The Christian Science Monitor. And thanks for visiting my website. Please keep in touch!
